Meet the Teachers Who Make Ivybrook Feel Like Home

At Ivybrook Academy Mount Pleasant, our teachers are more than educators, they’re partners in your child’s growth.

Each member of our team brings patience, warmth, and a deep understanding of early childhood. We welcome every child as an individual, meeting them where they are and helping them feel confident, curious, and safe.

Our school is built around people who truly notice children, their personalities, their needs, their small daily moments. As a parent, you deserve to know the humans guiding your child each day. We’re grateful you’re here, and we’d love for you to get to know the heart behind our classrooms.

Owner's Story

Heather Calhoun celebrating graduation day with her daughter at Ivybrook Academy Mount Pleasant.

For eleven years, I had the privilege of being a stay-at-home mom to our three children. Those years at home, the slow mornings, the one-on-one moments, shaped everything I believe about early childhood development. I look back on that season with tremendous gratitude; it was a gift to be fully present during those early years, and I cherished that time with each of my little ones.

Being home during that time also helped me clarify what exactly I wanted for them in a preschool. I knew I didn’t want long days in daycare or environments that felt rushed or overstimulating. I wanted something intentional, and genuinely supportive of early development, an environment and experience that protected the joys of childhood while at the same time allowing for true learning.

When my husband accepted a job in the Charleston area, our family made two big decisions at once: we were moving to Mount Pleasant, and we were choosing to bring Ivybrook Academy to this community. We had already spent years researching different preschool models, and Ivybrook’s blended Montessori–Reggio approach aligned perfectly with what I valued as both a mom and an educator at heart. We believed Mount Pleasant needed an option that felt unique, thoughtful, and developmentally grounded, not just another childcare model.

So while my husband began his new role, I poured my energy into opening the Mount Pleasant campus. One of the most meaningful moments of my life was watching our youngest daughter, five years old at the time, become our very first student enrolled. Sharing that first year with her in the school we had just opened was incredibly special, and it confirmed everything we wanted other families in our community to experience.

One of the greatest joys since opening has been building the team we have today. Our teachers are caring, talented, and deeply committed to their students. They show up each day ready to support with patience, and genuine connection. I’m so proud of each of them and incredibly grateful to be able to work alongside them.

We’re grateful for the Ivybrook vision created by its founders, Jennifer and Drew, a thoughtful model that aligned with our values and made it possible for us to bring this kind of preschool experience to Mount Pleasant.

And so, today Ivybrook Academy's Mount Pleasant campus exists because our family believed deeply in a better preschool experience, one that honors childhood, respects each child’s pace, and partners closely with parents and families.

I’m grateful you’re here, and I would love to help you explore whether Ivybrook is the right place for your child.
