Owner's Story
Curtis and Tamara McDonald - Owners
Curtis and Tamara began their journey with Ivybrook Academy in 2017 as the second family to join the franchise. After witnessing firsthand the profound impact of Ivybrook Academy’s innovative and progressive educational philosophy on children in their community, they felt a strong calling to become part of an organization making such a meaningful difference in early childhood development. Their passion for education and commitment to fostering children's growth has guided their involvement with Ivybrook Academy ever since.
Curtis brings a distinguished background spanning both public service and corporate leadership. A U.S. Navy veteran and former FBI Special Agent, he has demonstrated a lifelong dedication to service, integrity, and leadership. He holds degrees in Biology and Secondary Education from Old Dominion University, which enabled him to explore a range of professional paths. Currently, Curtis serves in a senior leadership role at a Fortune 500 company, where he has built a successful 25-year career marked by advancement and impact.
Tamara began her professional career in the financial sector, but after the birth of their first daughter, she was inspired to pursue a future in the field of education. In 2008, she earned her bachelor’s degree in Elementary and Special Education and has since devoted herself to supporting children’s emotional and academic development. Her work is rooted in helping students build confidence, develop problem solving skills, and embark on the journey of life long learning. These principles remain central to her approach to education.
Long before Ivybrook Academy became a part of their lives, Curtis and Tamara were a strong and united team. Their shared values; family, education, and purposeful work continue to guide their journey both personally and professionally. Joining the Ivybrook Academy family was a natural next step.
"Working with children has been the highlight of my professional journey. Whether it’s seeing their smiling faces as they eagerly walk through the door, hearing the excitement from students as they conquer an engineering challenge, or witnessing a child confidently speak in front of others in a supportive environment are just of few of the reasons I’m passionate about what I do." Tamara
